Warehouse conveyor and sortation system moving boxes through a distribution center

Material handling

Drives that start loaded conveyors soft and stop them on the mark

Conveyors, sortation, and palletizing are constant-torque work, so the gain is rarely energy. It is starting a fully loaded conveyor without snapping a belt or stripping a gearbox, holding line speed across a system, and stopping accurately with controlled braking. The Optidrive P2 does all three with vector torque up to 200 percent from zero speed.

Why drives matter

Where drives earn their place on a line

Material handling is almost all constant torque, so a drive is not mainly an energy device here. It is what lets a loaded conveyor start without shock, keeps a whole system in step, and brings heavy motion to a controlled stop.

200%

Torque from zero speed

Start a loaded belt without the shock

A loaded conveyor or bucket elevator needs 150 to 200 percent of running torque just to break away, and an across-the-line start delivers it as a jolt that tears belt splices and stresses gearboxes. Vector control supplies that torque from zero speed on a smooth ramp, so the line starts loaded without the damage.

Held in step

Keep the whole system in step

Accumulation, merge, and sortation points only work if every section runs at a known speed. A drive holds set speed under changing load and indexes cleanly, which is what makes zero-pressure accumulation and accurate diverts possible.

0 coast

Controlled stops

Stop heavy motion on the mark

Inclined and high-inertia conveyors overhaul the motor when they stop or run downhill. A brake chopper and resistor absorb that energy for a controlled stop and controlled lowering, instead of a long coast or a slammed mechanical brake.

Applications and drives

Drives we recommend for material handling

Most material handling runs on the Optidrive P2 for its vector torque, S-ramp, and built-in brake chopper, with the Optidrive E3 a budget fit for the lightest conveyors and feeders. Enclosure follows the plant: IP20 on clean indoor lines, IP55 where dust and debris are heavy.

Quick ROI estimate

Estimate your run-cost savings

Enter motor HP, annual hours, energy cost, and operating capacity (the share of full flow the pump runs at). Drive price is optional. Results are estimates for variable torque loads (centrifugal pumps and fans) based on the affinity laws. Savings rise as capacity falls and shrink when static head is high; constant torque loads see little benefit, and at full speed there is no saving.

Estimated annual savings

Formula: motor kW x annual hours x energy cost x savings rate, where motor kW is HP x 0.746. The savings rate comes from the pump affinity laws: power falls with the cube of speed, so a drive saves energy only by running the pump below full speed, and the saving shrinks as static head rises. Drive losses of about 3 percent are included. Payback uses the entered drive price, or the recommended one when blank. Verify against the pump curve for critical sizing.
