Agricultural drives lineup against a CAD wireframe backdrop

Agriculture

Drives for irrigation, grain handling, and farm ventilation

From booster pumps to grain conveyors, agricultural installs need drives that handle dust, voltage variation, and seasonal duty cycles. Here is what we recommend and why.

30-50%

Energy cut on variable-flow pumps and fans

IP66

Dust and weather sealed for outdoor duty

1-100 HP

Typical agricultural motor range

NEC 430 motor circuits, NEC 675 for center-pivot machines, IP66/NEMA 4X for outdoor duty, Authorized Invertek distributor

Why drives matter

Where VFDs change the field economics

The value is more than a softer start. On the farm, drives hold irrigation pressure as wells and demand shift, cut energy on pumps and fans, and protect motors from the inrush that trips rural generators.

30-50%

Energy cut on pumps and fans

Throttling wastes power on the farm

Irrigation pumps and barn fans are centrifugal, so they follow the affinity laws. Matching speed to demand instead of running full speed against a valve or damper cuts power by roughly a third to a half.

Affinity laws, power tracks the cube of speed

Payback on irrigation pumps

ROI inside a growing season

A 10 HP pump running about 1,800 hours a season can pay back a drive in under a year at typical energy rates. Treat that as an estimate and run your own figures in the calculator below.

0 spikes

Motor and genset protection

Soft starts cut the inrush

Across-the-line starts pull heavy inrush that shortens motor life and trips rural generators. A ramped start removes the current spike and the mechanical shock.

Applications and drives

Drives we recommend for agriculture

Field-deployed equipment lives outdoors, eats dust, and runs on long duty cycles. Each pairing below shows the Invertek drive matched to the HP and the IP66 outdoor enclosure that the ag application actually needs.

Application 1 of 6

Irrigation booster pumps

Pressure-controlled pumping for irrigation zones and booster skids. Centrifugal load, so PID speed control holds pressure and the affinity laws do the rest on energy.

Grain conveyors

Motor control for grain belts and drag conveyors. Constant torque with heavy dust, so the value is high starting torque and a sealed enclosure, not cube-law energy.

Quick ROI estimate

Estimate savings on your pumps and fans

Enter motor HP, annual hours, energy cost, and operating capacity (the share of full flow the pump runs at). Drive price is optional. Results are estimates for variable torque loads (centrifugal pumps and fans) based on the affinity laws. Savings rise as capacity falls and shrink when static head is high; constant torque loads see little benefit, and at full speed there is no saving.

Estimated annual savings

$0
0 kWh saved
0 Payback months

Formula: motor kW x annual hours x energy cost x savings rate, where motor kW is HP x 0.746. The savings rate comes from the pump affinity laws: power falls with the cube of speed, so a drive saves energy only by running the pump below full speed, and the saving shrinks as static head rises. Drive losses of about 3 percent are included. Payback uses the entered drive price, or the recommended one when blank. Verify against the pump curve for critical sizing.
